Mick Schumacher enters McLaren 2023 reserve driver pool

Mercedes Reserve Driver, Mick Schumacher, has been added to McLaren’s pool of reserve drivers which means the German can be called upon when needed.

On Wednesday, McLaren announced it had agreed to an arrangement with the Mercedes-AMG F1 team that would put the young German into a reserve driver pool allowing the Woking-based outfit to call him up if required.

Schumacher joined Mercedes in December, last year, as the teams official reserve driver ahead of the 2023 season after he parted ways with Haas F1, after two seasons.

Despite 42 race starts – and 12 points which he scored last season – the American team opted to vacate his seat to offer it to, fellow countryman, Nico Hulkenberg for the upcoming season.

In the announcement, on Twitter, the team said:

McLaren will be able to call on @SchumacherMick as a reserve driver during the 2023 F1 season as part of our arrangement with Mercedes. Welcome to the family, Mick.”

Taking up the mantle of reserve driver at both Mercedes and McLaren provides the young German with two opportunities to return to the F1 grid, albeit in a substitute role.

Schumacher will be in company with IndyCar champion, Alex Palou, within McLaren’s reserve driver list should Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri be forced to miss out a race weekend.

Earlier this week, Mercedes showed images on social media of their official reserve driver getting a seat fitted in the event he is required to temporarily replace George Russel or Lewis Hamilton.

The Woking-based outfit now shares a familiar connection to Schumacher having replaced Sauber’s newest CEO, Andreas Seidl, with Andrea Stella who was Michael Schumacher’s performance engineer at Ferrari from 2002 to 2006.

In the post the team stated:

Full circle. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella worked closely with Mick’s father, the legendary Michael Schumacher, as his Performance Engineer.”
