Mercedes sign Mick Schumacher as Reserve driver

Mick Schumacher has signed for Mercedes-AMG F1 as the team’s reserve driver ahead of the 2023 season, following his departure from Haas F1 this year.

Schumacher has now signed for Mercedes ahead of the 2023 season to become the teams reserve driver where the German will help develop the team’s 2023 challenger; the W14.

The son of F1 legend, Michael Schumacher, is expected to conduct regular work in the teams simulator throughout the season, as the team recover from their first season without a championship since the Hybrid Era began.

Alongside the simulator work, Schumacher is expected to attend all of the Grands Prix with the team across the upcoming season, while carrying out marketing duties.

On the announcement, Schumacher said:

“I am thrilled to be part of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team as their reserve driver for 2023, and I am committed to give it my all to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment.

“I take this as a new start, and I am just excited and grateful to Toto and everybody involved for putting their trust in me.

“F1 is such a fascinating world, and you never stop learning, so I look forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting in all my efforts for the benefit of the Mercedes team.”

The young German’s spell in F1 was fairly short-lived after he spent the last two years racing for Haas F1 Team – alongside both Kevin Magnussen (2022) and Nikita Mazepin (2021).

In 43 race starts, Schumacher secured his maiden championship points when he secured an eighth place finish at the 2022 British Grand Prix. This was quickly supported by his career best finish of sixth at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.

On the appointment, Team Principle and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team CEO, Toto Wolff said:

“Mick is a talented young driver and we’re delighted to have him join the Team. He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver.

“These are all important qualities, and we’re excited for him to help us develop the W14.

“We also know that with two years of experience racing in Formula One under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis or George, should that need arise.”

That’s it for the article; Mercedes sign Mick Schumacher as Reserve driver!
