NASCAR ban Chastain wall-riding move
4th February 2023NASCAR have announced they have banned drivers from running their cars up against the wall, like Ross Chastain did in last years Martinsville Cup playoff race.
On the final lap of the playoff race at Martinsville, Chastain found himself outside the playoffs for the championship race. In a bid to improve his fortunes, the Trackhouse driver drove directly into the side of the third corner wall, gained speed and overtook five cars in the final two corners.
Initially, NASCAR allowed the move to stand and granted the Trackhouse driver progression into the championship finale.
However, ahead of the 2023 season, the sport has completely banned any similar moved from occurring in the future. While an individual rule is not being implemented to avoid further instances, it believes Rule 10.5.2.6.A will cover any future attempts.
The rule states:
“Safety is a top priority for NASCAR and NEM. Therefore, any violations deemed to compromise the safety of an Event or otherwise pose a dangerous risk to the safety of Competitors, Officials, spectators, or others are treated with the highest degree of seriousness. Safety violations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.”
Anyone found committing such a move in the future will be penalised. The sport has determined a penalty for a similar maneuver would incur a lap or a time penalty.
The wall-riding move by Chastain was met with praise for its creativity. In the wake of the Martinsville Cup playoff race, the move circulated the internet at a similar rate of knots as Chastian’s move, as the moment went viral on social media.
Formula 1 driver, Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo and Fernando Alonso were some note-worthy fans of the driver’s commitment to the move.
