The World Endurance Championship is halfway through its 100th race at Japan’s Fuji Speedway, and there has been the first retirement of the race as BMW brought out a lengthy safety car intervention.
How has the first half unfolded?
As Cadillac led the pack in pole position, the fierce fighting began straight away. Porsche’s #5 was forced to the gravel within the opening minutes, returning behind the #51 Aston Martin and #51 Ferrari, down in sixth.
At the same time, the Racing Spirit of Leman was removed from the race lead by the two United Autosports McLarens in the LMGT3 class.
Just as the session’s first hour was drawing to a close, there were two spells of Full Course Yellows, allowing the marshals to remove debris from the track. It was soon upgraded to a full safety car as the first 60 minutes finished.
After the session returned to green, led by Cadillac’s #12 car, Toyota’s #8 contender was forced into the pits for a three-minute stop-and-go penalty after entering the pit lane, when it was closed, under Full Course Yellow conditions.
It followed contact between the Toyota and #35 Alpine, which resulted in a puncture for the former.
After the two-hour mark, the VSC was redeployed as the #15 BMW M Team WRT found the barrier at turn eight. The BMW tried to pass the #99 Proton Competition but as they slipped in behind, the BMW lost control and crashed, sustaining heavy damage to its suspension.
The VSC, and subsequent safety car, were brought out to extract the stranded hypercar and repair the barrier. The race returned to green conditions with 22 minutes left on the clock before the race entered its second half.
At the halfway mark, the #99 Proton Competition led the way for the Hypercars ahead of Peugeot’s #93 contender as the #7 Toyota completed the top three. Further down, United Autosports #59 McLaren led the LMGT3 class ahead of two Porsches belonging to Iron Dames (#85) and Manthey 1st Phorm (#92).
Three hours remain…

Hi, I’m Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion.
I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I’ve loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
