Recently, Verstappen’s future in the sport has been under immense scrutiny, with the four-time world champion being heavily linked with a potential move to Mercedes.
It has been reported that the Dutchman has exit clauses he could act upon, within in contract, to release him from Red Bull Racing, who he is contracted to until 2028.
However, ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, which will take place ahead of the annual two-week summer break, the multiple world champion wants to ‘stop all the rumours’ about his future.
According to F1.com, he said:
“I think it’s time to basically stop all the rumours, and for me it’s always been quite clear that I was staying anyway.”
Speculation fired up about Verstappen’s move when it was found that boats belonging to Verstappen and Mercedes F1 Team Principal, Toto Wolff were spotted in Sardinia, fuelling the rumours of a potential change.
Verstappen has now hit back at this ‘waffling,’ stating people like to stir the pot and ‘create drama’ with the speculation on a potential move to Mercedes.
“The thing is, people are waffling so much throughout the whole season while the only one that actually can or should speak is not speaking,” he told Sky Sports F1.
“That’s me, and I do that on purpose because it makes no sense to start throwing things around and actually that should be the same for everyone.
“Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama but for me it’s always been quite clear and also for next year.
“I’m discussing with the team already the plans, the things that we want to change next year so that means I’m also staying with the team for next year and if my boat is next to Toto’s then the boat is next to Toto’s.
“You can have a personal relationship with someone even if you don’t have a working relationship with someone.”
There is speculation that the rumours on his future could spring back up in 2026, when the new technical and power unit regulations begin. Next season would give the four-time world champion a clearer view of how other teams are performing with the newest set of regulations.
