Piastri has taken his eighth career victory at the Belgian GP as the Australian completed a first lap pass when the race finally got underway at Spa.

The race did not get underway immediately as the pack were led behind the safety car, in wet conditions, for half a lap before the start procedure was aborted and then quickly red-flagged.

All 20 F1 cars were huddled inside the pit lane for an hour and 20 minutes, as a storm cell passed over, before the race finally got underway behind the safety car.

On lap four of 44, the safety car pulled away from the pack, leaving McLaren’s Lando Norris to control the pace. However, on the first racing lap, Piastri snatched the race lead from Norris at the end of the Kemmel Straight.

From there, the Australian never looked under pressure and managed to extend his race lead over Norris.

When the conditions transferred from wet to dry, the majority of the field opted for the medium compound tyres, whilst Norris was the first to head into the pits to fit the hards.

It was only stop for the top three in the race as they removed their worn inters for the slick-dry tyres.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three, having defended his position against Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who finished fourth.

As a result of Piastri’s victory, it means the Australian will head into the final race before the summer break with a 16-point advantage over Norris.

The Hungarian Grand prix will get underway next weekend, in Budapest, on August 1 until August 3.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
