How are points handed out if Belgian GP doesn’t go full distance?

Formula 1’s Belgian Grand Prix is currently on hold as rain has stopped running at Spa-Francorchamps, but if the race doesn’t go full distance, how will the points be awarded?

Ahead of the Belgian GP, rain fell at the historical circuit, which prompted a formation lap from behind the safety car. The pack did not even complete a lap before the FIA race control suspended the race start procedure, and then it was red-flagged.

The cars ventured back into the pit lane and have remained there ever since as a storm cell passes over the circuit.

As the race has not officially started, it means the two-hour race clock has not started either, and this also means the three hour window has not started either.

Ahead of the Belgian GP, there were support races which were conducted before the main event; Formula 3, Formula 2 and the Porsche Supercup. The two latter series were able to get underway without many issues but the F3 race was cancelled due to the weather.

Following the outcome of the Belgian Grand Prix, in 2021, the FIA changed how the points were handed out to avoid another controversial outcome if weather was to hampen a race.

Firstly, the race leader – McLaren’s Lando Norris, for now – has to complete two racing laps, minimum, without any help from the safety car, or a virtual safety car, before any points will be awarded.

If the race was to go ahead but was not able to go more than 25% of the race distance, the top five finishers will be awarded points. The winner will get 6 points whilst the remaining four drivers will be awarded 4pts, 3pts, 2pts and 1 point, respectively.

However, if the race passes 25% but completes less than 50% of the race distance, the top nine will be awarded points. The winner will get 13 points and the remaining eight will get; 10pts, 8pts, 6pts, 5pts, 4pts, 3pts, 2pts and 1 point.

If 50% is completed but less than 75%, it means the points will be shared to the top 10 drivers. Again, the winner will get the most with 19 points followed by 14pts, 12pts, 9pts, 8pts, 6pts, 5pts, 3pts, 2pts and 1 point for the remaining nine drivers.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
