Norris leads home a front-row lockout for McLaren as the Briton pipped his teammate Oscar Piastri to the top spot by 0.083 seconds around Spa-Francorchamps. It marks the second McLaren pole position of the weekend as Piastri took home the Sprint Pole position on Friday.
Verstappen, who secured the sprint race win earlier on in the day, could only best fourth place as he changed his set-up to increase downforce for the Grand Prix with rain expected on the forecast during the race. He was pipped to the post by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who secured third place on the grid.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton suffered a shock exit in Q1, dropping out at P16, after the seven-time world champion was found to have exceeded track limits at Radillion. The seven-time world champion was in sixth before his lap time was deleted and he was dropped into the elimination zone.
There was a spot of drama before qualifying got going as Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkeberg squeezed his way through into the pit lane. Hulkenberg put his wheel over the white line in a busy pit lane, and he made contact with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, prompting a quick front wing change for the German.
Hulkenberg is set to be under investigation after the session due to that incident.
