Norris has secured his 13th career pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix, wth a quick lap time of 1m 40.562s, pipping his teammate – and championship leader – Piastri to the top spot.
On the final runs of Q3, Norris topped the timing boards and no one was able to pip the Briton, who has won the last two consecutive events (Austria and Great Britain) ahead of the Belgian GP.
Although Piastri took sprint pole position on Friday afternoon, the Australian was not able to beat his teammate and could only best second as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three.
Talking about Ferrari, Leclerc’s teammate Lewis Hamilton had a shock exit after Q1 as the seven-time world champion had his lap time deleted for track limits.
Hamilton had escaped Q1, going sixth fastest, but it was found the #44 Ferrari had exceeded track limits at the top of Radillion and dropped to 16th.
However, there was one twist in qualifying as Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg currently remains under investigation – which will be conducted post-qualifying – for a pit lane incident with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll.
The two came together in the pit lane ahead of Q1 when the German driver, and British Grand Prix podium finisher, pushed his way into the fast lane in the pits. However, no further action was taken by the stewards.
Conditions remained dry around the historic Spa-Francorchamps to give the teams and drivers a simple qualifying hour. However, the conditions are expected to be wet on Sunday with rain forecast to be in the area.
The Belgian Grand Prix will get underway at 3pm, local time, on Sunday afternoon.
