The prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans returned for round four of the World Endurance Championship, at the iconic Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans.

Cadillac led the pack to the green flag, having secured their first ever Le Mans pole position, but despite their best efforts to control the opening lap of the race, the #5 Porsche took the race lead into the first Mulsanne chicane.

From there, the Porsche established a comfortable gap of six seconds.

After 18 minutes, the Aston Martin #009 was the first to venture into the pit lane, taking the Valkerie out of sync with the rest of the hypercar contenders. Seven minutes later, the remaining hypercar contenders out front encountered their first taste of backmarkers under race conditions.

Near the end of the first hour, the majority of the hypercar class peeled into the pit lane for their first stops in the 24-hour race. But, the #4 Porsche, #83 AF Corse and the #94 Peugeot remained out on track.

The order was quickly reinstated after the first cycle of pit stops were completed and the #5 Porsche returned to the race lead whilst the #12 and #38 Cadillac’s regained second and third, respectively.

Peugeot’s Paul di Resta gave the iconic race its first big moment, in the dying moments of the first hour, as his car skipped across the gravel at the Porsche curves.

The Briton was caught out by GT traffic and ran over the gravel before bashing the barrier. His engine cover and rear wing were ripped off on contact. He was able to return to the pits for repairs and get back out onto the circuit.

23 hours remain…

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
