McLaren has confirmed it will return to WEC in the next two years with their very own hypercar, joining the top tier of classification in the endurance championship.
The McLaren brand already races in the Endurance Championship, among the LM GT3 classification with their McLaren GT3 Evo, partnered with United Autosports.
However, the team have now teased a return to the top class.
In the vague announcement, which mentioned the team’s 1995 Le Mans victory, their first at the event, McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown, simply said:
“We’re back.”
Not much has been revealed in the announcement, apart from the confirmation that McLaren intends to join the WEC grid in two years.
It means in 2027, McLaren would join an already impressive list of Alpine, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Peugeot, Porsche, Toyota and Aston Martin. Hyundai, under its Genesis premium brand, is also set to join the contingent next year.
Earlier this year, it was also confirmed that Ford will return to the WEC in 2027 with a ‘full works team.’
This announcement will also expand McLaren’s portfolio, where they race in several motorsport disciplines such as Formula 1, IndyCar, Formula E and e-Sports.

Hi, I’m Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion.
I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I’ve loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
