Ford have confirmed, announced by the Ford Motor Company executive chair Bill Ford, that the manufacturer will be aiming to return to the WEC with a full works team.

The team’s announcement states they will be looking ‘to recapture the magic and success of Ford racing nearly 60 years ago.’

The brand states their return, set for 2027, will see them take on a full factory team as they enter the FIA WEC, aiming to take on the most prestigious endurance races on the planet: the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

On the announcement, Ford said:

“We are entering a new era for performance and racing at Ford. You can see it from what we’re doing on-road and off-road. When we race, we race to win. And there is no track or race that means more to our history than Le Mans.

“It is where we took on Ferrari and won in the 1960s. It is where we returned 50 years later and shocked the world and beat Ferrari again. I am thrilled that we’re going back to Le Mans and competing at the highest level of endurance racing.

“We are ready to once again challenge the world, and ‘go like hell!’”

The company had previously secured wins at Le Mans between 1966 and 1969 where the team took four consecutive victories at the iconic event, beating the likes of Ferrari – which inspired the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari.

When Ford arrives to the sport in 2027, they will join a number of impressive names who will battle it out for world championship honours such as; Toyota, Ferrari, Porsche, Peugeot, Genesis, Cadillac, BMW, Aston Martin and Alpine.

“Ford and endurance racing are a perfect fit, as has been proven time and again,” commented FIA Endurance Commission President, Richard Mille. “It is a brand with a long and proud motorsport heritage, and a passion for competition instilled by Henry Ford himself.

“The company’s return to the highest level of the discipline is further validation of the success and appeal of the current Hypercar regulations. Endurance racing’s golden age is right here, and right now!”

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
