On Friday, McLaren announced they will depart the all-electric Formula E series at the end of the current season following a strategic review of their racing portfolio. They state the decision was made to ‘maximise future opportunities.’
This news follows the brand’s announcement to join the World Endurance Championship in 2027, with their own hypercar entry. That year, they will be the only motorsport brand to compete in Formula 1, IndyCar and WEC.
McLaren have stated the decision will allow them to maintain a ‘focused and strategic’ approach to all their racing activities and offer growth across their key markets, whilst offering a ‘versatile and impactful’ sponsorship ecosystem in the motorsport landscape.
“We are immensely proud of what we have achieved in Formula E and the series plays an integral part in the overall motorsport landscape,” said McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown.
“But the time is right to explore other opportunities that more closely align with McLaren Racing’s overall strategic direction – including our 2027 entry into the FIA World Endurance Championship.
“For now, we are focused on setting this great team up for future success by working towards securing a new owner. The team has delivered a strong start to the year and we intend to finish the season on a high. I’d like to thank the team, Formula E, our partners, and our fans for their continued support.”
McLaren joined the Formula E series in Season 9 as the team took over from the championship-winning Mercedes team – who won in Season 8. Since then, their driver Taylor Barnard has become the youngest-ever polesitter in the sport’s history at the Jeddah E-Prix, and they have taken five pole positions and one win.
Although they are planning to leave the sport at the end of the year, McLaren have stated they remain fully committed to fight for success until the end of the season.
“Although our McLaren Racing chapter comes to an end, we recognise the value and power of Formula E as a World Championship and platform for positive change as the sport goes from strength to strength,” commented McLaren Electric Racing Team Principal and Managing Director, Ian James.
“Work is well underway to explore the best opportunities for the team to continue competing beyond Season 11. In the meantime, we will be giving our all to make sure that we finish the current chapter of our Formula E adventure in style.”
McLaren have laid down an ambitious achievement to chase after the Triple Crown when they return to WEC, a feat which requires wins in motorsports most prestigious events; Monaco Grand Prix, Indy500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
They are aiming to repeat this feat once more, having being the only motorsport team to do so.
