Da Costa fastest in Formula E first practice at 2025 Mexico E-Prix
11th January 2025Antonio Felix da Costa, Tag Heuer Porsche, topped the first Formula E practice session of 2025 as the sport returns to action with the Mexico E-Prix.

Formula E returned in 2025 after a brief break following the Season 11 opener in Sao Paulo at the Mexico E-Prix and it was business as usual in free practice 1 of the two-day weekend, at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Andretti’s Nico Muller was the first driver to venture onto the circuit which has been shorted to incorporate the electric series yet still combining a mix of track features, making up the circuit’s 19 corners.
As the teams and drivers continued to gather data ahead of their race weekend, there were reports of rain by several drivers. However, the short rain spell didn’t dampen their lap times as the competitors continued to put in faster lap times.
The drivers struggled to get a grip in the final corner with many making minor corrections to keep their cars pointing forward. This was not the case for Cupra’s David Beckmann who tapped the rear of his Gen3Evo with the barrier.
The German was able to quickly skip over the pit-entry line and return to his garage.

In the end, Felix da Costa topped the timing boards with a blistering 1m 10.855s lap time, ahead of Britons Taylor Barnard and Oliver Rowland – for McLaren and Nissan respectively – who completed the top three.
The reigning champion and Porsche driver, Pascal Wehrlein topped the session in fourth, three-tenths behind his teammate’s fastest time. He was joined by the current championship leader Mitch Evans of Jaguar who completed the top five.
Lola Yamaha’s Lucas di Grassi, Nissan’s Norman Nato, Envision Racings Sebastien Buei, Edoardo Mortara of Mahindra and Stoffel Vandoorne, Maserati MSG, completed the top 10 in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.
Nyck de Vries, Mahindra, and Daniel Ticktum of Cupra Kiro topped the bottom 12 drivers in the order, in 11th and 12th, ahead of the Andretti pairing of Muller and Jake Dennis who sat 14th and 15th. This left Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy to complete the top 15.
McLaren’s Sam Bird was the last driver to remain within a second of da Costa’s time, eight-tenths off in 16th. He was joined by the pairing of Jean-Eric Vergne and Maximilian Gunther of DS Penske in 17th and 19th. Maserati’s Jake Hughes completed the DS sandwich in 18th.
Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns, Beckmann and Lola Yamaha’s Zane Maloney completed the order in 20th, 21st and 22nd respectively.
FP2 starts again at 7:30am ahead of the first round of qualifying action at 9:40am before the race gets underway at 2:05pm (times displayed in local time).
