Oliver Rowland secures first Formula E win of 2025 with late charge at Mexico E-Prix

Nissan’s Oliver Rowland pulled on a masterful race to snatch the race lead after a late charge in between safety car stops to win the Formula E Mexico City E-Prix.

Rowland has taken his first win of the season, and his first of 2025, with a masterful and tactical drive as he overtook the top three drivers in one lap, in between two safety car interventions.

The Nissan driver started the race fourth on the grid and looked to sniff potential moves on the two Porsches of Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa early on, but could not make a pass.

Whilst the race lead changed hands, it did not fall to Rowland until after the first safety car. This was brought out on lap 29 after Cupra’s David Beckmann crashed out at turn 12. Although Rowland had attack mode in use, the safety car stop looked as if he was going to run out of time.

However, when the safety car peeled back into the pit lane, Rowland still had attack mode available. At the end of lap 30, Rowland charged forward. The Briton dispatched Andretti’s Jake Dennis into turn one before he followed that up with moves on Da Costa and Wehrlein into the second sector.

By the time his attack mode ran out, the Briton was in the race lead as the safety car was deployed once more for the Jaguar of Mitch Evans which retired on the exit of turn 11 after a collision with Andretti’s Nico Muller. Although he had to face a race restart, the Nissan driver did not falter.

By the chequered flag, Rowland won with only 0.7% of battery left available in his Gen3Evo ahead of Da Costa and Wehrlein who finished second and third respectively.

Following Evan’s DNF, in the latter stages of the race, it means the Jaguar driver loses his championship lead and drops to third behind Da Costa takes over ahead of Rowland who takes first and second in the championship.

Formula E will return next month on February 13-14 for the Jeddah E-Prix at the Saudi Arabian Jeddah Corniche Circuit, for round three of the championship.
