Verstappen fastest in sole Austrian GP practice despite red flag
28th June 2024Red Bull’s Max Verstappen set the fastest lap in the only practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix race weekend, despite bringing out a red flag.
With one sole practice session for the entire race weekend, due to the Sprint Race format, several drivers rushed straight out onto the Austrian Red Bull Ring.
The Hard and Medium compound tyres mixed down the field as many of the drivers opted to use these tyres as their opening stint, apart from the Williams’ who opted to utilise the soft compound tyres.
The majority of the field put on a set of softs as the session came to an end,
However, the session wasn’t without issue as Max Verstappen brought out the red flag as the Red Bull driver had a technical issue down the pit straight.
How FP1 ended…
Verstappen was the fastest driver out on track with a lap time of 1m 5.685s, with the soft tyres. The Dutchman may have brought out the red flag but the triple world champion quickly got back out on track.
Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc completed the top three, in second and third respectively. The McLaren and Ferrari drivers were closely followed by Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton who completed the top five, in fourth and fifth.
Whilst the top four completed soft-tyre runs, Hamilton was the only driver inside the top five to complete the session on the hard compound tyres.
Esteban Ocon completed the session in sixth, ahead of Lance Stroll, George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda and Fernando Alonso, in order of seventh to 10th.
Pierre Gasly led the bottom 10, in 11th, ahead of Sergio Perez and Lando Norris who finished 12th and 13th. The Kick Sauber pairing of Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas completed the top-15, in 14th and 15th.
Daniel Riccardo led the bottom five in 16th ahead of the two Haas and Williams drivers. Nico Hulkenberg was the leading Haas (17th) while Alexander Albon was the leading Williams (18th), Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant completed the field in 19th and 20th respectively.
