The Florida-born Formula 1 racer has come under immense criticism over his short, two-year tenure and it looks highly likely that the American driver will see his days in the famous sport come to an end.
The Williams driver has been out-qualified by his teammate Alexander Albon in every qualifying session since he joined the sport. The only exception was at the Miami Grand Prix when he out-qualified Albon as the latter lost his lap time due to a track limit violation.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for Sargeant as it is rumoured that he will be making the jump from one single-seater sport to another.
A homecoming for Sargeant
As the silly season of Formula 1 continues to unfold with many drivers waiting on Carlos Sainz to make his move, the 23-year-old will likely lose his seat at the end of the season.
Williams Team Principal James Vowels has publicly shown an interest in snatching up the soon-to-be unemployed Sainz to partner up alongside Albon, who recently signed a new contract with the team, leaving Sargeant without a seat if it goes through.
However, as this has unfolded in the background, it is speculated that Sargeant has taken up his initiative and lined up a potential move to IndyCar.
If the move is pulled off he will join the list of former F1 drivers who made the move from F1 to IndyCar such as Marcus Ericsson, Takuma Sato, Romain Grosjean and Alexander Rossi. Drivers who have rediscovered their competitive edge.
It’s speculated that the Floridian will partner up with Prema who are set to make their 2025 IndyCar debut with two Chevrolet-powered entries.
The American driver has some connections with the Italian motorsport team as he competed with Prema Racing in 2020, where he finished third in the Formula 3 world championship.
Rumours have it that an official announcement should come in July before F1 heads into its annual summer break.
