Wolff believes the Spanish GP circuit, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, will provide a good test of the team’s progress as the team looks to iron out their ‘weakness’ on tracks with wide speed ranges.
Mercedes has had a bit of an underwhelming season so far but George Russell’s pole position and subsequent podium finish, in Canada, have shown the team is making progress.
“We have continued to make incremental gains across the past few races. It was encouraging therefore to take another positive step forward in Canada,” said Wolff.
“To see that translate into our strongest team result of the season so far is a reward for everyone’s hard work.”
Wolff and the team are aware that their closest rivals will continue to pump in upgrades to make their packages more competitive, as the development race continues.
Before the 2020 Pandemic, the Spanish circuit was once the venue for the sport’s pre-season test. Its mixed nature of corners tests out different aspects of the car from the aerodynamical grip, at turn three, to the mechanical grip, at turn five.
As a result of the high, medium and slow speed corners, the circuit will put the car to its test and show Mercedes if they are in a position to fight at the front.
“Barcelona will provide a good test of our progress,” Wolff continued. “It has a mix of fast, medium, and low-speed corners, a long straight and plenty of elevation change.
“Tracks that contain this wide speed range have been a weakness of ours so far this year.
“This weekend will therefore provide another opportunity to evaluate our progress through our recent updates, and we hope to build on the positive momentum from Montreal.”
As it currently stands, Mercedes sit fourth in the constructors championship with 124 points to their name. The Brackley-based team sit 88 points behind their closest rival, McLaren (212pts), who sit in third.
