The 2019 world champion was one of the favourites to win the Polish rally. However, he was seen at the side of the road on the second stage of the weekend – Stańczyki 1.
It was unclear why the Estonian had pulled off the road but it has been revealed that he collided with a deer at full speed, around 117mph (189km/h), down a flat-out straight.
According to the update, provided by Tanak, the Hyundai driver couldn’t avoid the wildlife.
On X, the 2019 WRC world champion said:
“It wasn’t the way we expected to start the rally. On a flat-out straight a deer jumped out of the grass directly in front of our car and unfortunately there were no chance to avoid it.”

After the stage, he was seen off the road inspecting the damage to the front of his Hyundai i20, with bits of his wounded car lying out in front of it.
However, Tanak confirmed the damage was too severe and they had to retire for the rest of the day.
“After the collision, the damage was too big to continue the stage and we are forced to retire for the day,” Tanak continued on X.
“The team will take the car back to the service and inspect the damage, but I think we should be able to continue tomorrow.”
