3 bold predictions for F1 2024 season
11th February 2024Formula One is just around the corner, and 24 races await the 2024 world championship meaning anything could happen, here are three bold predictions for the season.
Red Bull Racing dominated the 2023 world championship, taking 21 of 22 race wins across the season. 19 of those were at the hands of the reigning, three-time world champion Max Verstappen, followed by his teammate Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
As the field continues to get closer it is very unlikely that the Milton Keynes team will complete a similar feat in 2024. This opens the door to other, either new or returning, race winners climbing to the top step of the podium.
Before any on-track action gets underway for the Bahrain pre-season test, in just over a week, here are three bold predictions for the upcoming season.
Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren to score grand prix wins
Ferrari and Mercedes look to be the closest contenders to secure wins – alongside Red Bull – in the upcoming campaign. The Italian outfit will likely bounce back following a dismal 2023 season after 2022 saw them return to frequent winning ways and a worthy title fight.
Mercedes, on the other hand, will be able to focus on closing the gap with Red Bull after they scrapped their controversial zero-pod design part-way through 2023. Plus, a winless season may give the Silver Arrows the push they need.
McLaren is worthy of a shout too. Across the 2023 campaign, the Woking-based team featured on the podium nine times; seven times for Lando Norris and two times for Oscar Piastri. Following a sprint win and several second-place finishes, the team look to be within a chance of securing their first win since Daniel Ricciardo in Monza, 2021.
Lando Norris finally obtains his elusive race win
Race-winner. That is a title which has never found its way to the feet of Norris during his F1 career… yet. Following McLaren’s resurgence of 2023, when the team introduced their post-Austria spec MCL-60, Norris was a regular on the podium.
Across 2023, he never secured that accolade of being a Grand Prix race winner – finishing second six times; five times behind Verstappen and once behind former teammate, Sainz.
If McLaren can get the car to hit the ground running, unlike last year, then Norris will be within a chance to secure his maiden race win which has escaped him since Sochi, 2021.
Liam Lawson announced as an F1 driver in 2025
2025’s driver line-up has been swung into the air following Lewis Hamilton’s shock move to Ferrari for that season. Silly season is likely to ensue throughout the year and there is the opportunity for one driver: Liam Lawson.
Of his five race starts, the New Zealander impressed. The young Kiwi made two Q2 appearances and one Q3 appearance after he knocked Verstappen out of qualifying in Singapore. He also secured his maiden championship points in that race with a ninth-place finish – his best result.
As a Red Bull junior driver, the likely seat Lawson will obtain will be with the team’s second team: RB. However, these seats are currently occupied by Yuki Tsunoda and Ricciardo.
Depending on performances, a seat at RB may be freed up by a driver promotion to the senior Red Bull team, if Perez doesn’t retain his seat for 2025.
