British Grand Prix to remain on F1 calendar until 2034
8th February 2024The British Grand Prix is set to remain on the Formula One calendar until 2034 following a 10-year extension with the sport.
On Thursday, it was announced that the British Grand Prix will embark on its ninth decade in the sport which started at the first-ever F1 Grand Prix back in 1950.
Following an agreement between F1, the promoter: Silverstone and its owner the British Racing Drivers’ Club, the new deal will see the Silverstone circuit on the calendar until 2034.
As a result of the new deal, it means the Silverstone Circuit will remain on the calendar for another 10 years.
“I am delighted to announce that the British Grand Prix will remain on the calendar for ten more years with this agreement,” Formula 1 CEO and President, Stefano Domenicali said. “Silverstone is an iconic venue at the heart of F1 history and as it approaches its ninth decade hosting Grands Prix, the event continues to attract fans from around the world for fantastic racing on track and the amazing fan experience off it.”
“I would like to thank Peter Digby and the BRDC, as well as Stuart Pringle and the whole Silverstone team for their hard work and dedication to take the British Grand Prix to new heights. I look forward to working closely with them as they look to further improve the facilities and fan experience over the next ten years.”
According to F1’s press release, the sport will make the British GP a weekend to remember for the fans alongside the on-track action. Off-track, there will be concerts every evening headlined by the likes of Stormzy and Kings of Leon.
The British GP has become one of the biggest attended event on the F1 calendar where 480,000 fans attended the 2023 edition of the race across the weekend with 60,000 fans camping in the area.
On the announcement, Chairman of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, Peter Digby said:
“I am delighted we have secured a ten-year extension to host the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
“This contractual security will provide a solid base for the further development of the venue as we continue to improve and transform the circuit into a year-round international motorsport and leisure destination.
“The 2024 Formula 1 season will start with 9 BRDC Full and Honorary members on the grid and the importance of our continued support of young drivers is particularly evidenced by the success of Lewis, Lando, George and Alex.”
The historic race track, as previously mentioned, saw the first F1 race in the sports history bak in 1950 although the Northampton circuit was very different back then.
From there, the circuit has watched drivers who belong in the sports hall of fame securing their own victories at the British track. Such drivers include; Sir Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Sir Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen.
