Hartog secures maiden Porsche Supercup win as Buus extends lead

Team GP Elite’s Loek Hartog secured his maiden Porsche Mobil1 Supercup victory, on home soil, at the Dutch Grand Prix as BWT Lechner Racing’s Bastian Buus has extended his championship lead.

How the race unfolded…

It was a great start off the line from the pole sitter, Hartog, whereas BWT Lechner Racing’s championship contender, Buus, got a fairly poor start and left him to defend his position from Team GP Elite’s Larry ten Voorde. As Hartog continued to extend his race lead in the early stages, Buus went ultra-defensive to keep Voorde at bay. 

After the first lap, the top three remained unchanged with Hartog out in front ahead of Buus and Ten Voorde. However, there were yellow flags Nields Troost was stranded out on track at the first corner which meant no one could overtake into the heavy braking zone.

Replays showed that Troost collided with the last drivers at the back of the pack and rotated around at the first corner after the lights went out. Due to Troost’s retirement, it meant the safety car was deployed. However, on lap four the safety car was recalled back into the pit lane and the race resumed. 

The yellow flag was briefly brought out as CLRT’s Michael Verhagen outbroke himself in the first corner and quickly rotated around, on lap seven. The #17 Porsche of Ombra S.R.L.’s Risto Vurkov was forced to skip over the gravel trap to avoid the stranded CLRT driver. The yellow flag was soon waved away and back to green as Verhagen continued on his way. 

Bernd Maylander was redeployed back onto the race track once more, in the Aston Martin safety car, as GP Elite’s Lucas Van Eijndhoven beached himself into the gravel trap as he glanced over the grass under braking which spun his Porsche off the circuit at turn seven.

At the end of lap 10, Maylander peeled off into the pit lane once more and Hartog bolted back up to racing speed on the exit of turn 13. Hartog immediately took the defensive line on the run into turn one, to defend from Buus who was on the verge of a championship win. However, the BWT driver could not find a way by.

Compromised on the corner exit, Buus immediately felt the pressure by Ten Voorde and took defensive action on the run through turn three. After the restart lap, the top three remained unchanged. 

Despite Buus’s best efforts, Hartog has held his nerve long enough to take his first home – and maiden Mobil1 Porsche Supercup – win. Buus took second place ahead of Ten Voorde which means the BWT driver’s championship lead has now extended to 21 points as the sport heads into the final race, in Monza next weekend.
