Porsche Supercup: King secures opening win in Monaco as ten Voorde stutters

BWT Lechner Racing’s Harry King made a crucial move at the start of the race, on the streets of Monaco, to secure the opening win of the Porsche Supercup season.

Following on from last week’s cancellation, after the Italian Emilia Romagna region suffered severe flooding, the Mobil1 Porsche Supercup got underway on the streets of Monaco with, former Porsche Supercup champion, Team GP Elite’s Larry ten Voorde in pole position.

How the race unfolded…

It was a very poor start from ten Voorde who jittered off the starting line. In turn, this allowed BWT Lechner Racing’s Harry King to slide through and into the lead of the race, ahead of ten Voorde and BWT’s Bastian Buus.

On lap four, carnage ensued, two cars stopped on the exit of the turn six hairpin. Whereas, down to Ombra’s Keagan Masters was forced to peel back into the pit lane as the South African driver suffered suspension damage.

As the race progressed towards the end of lap 12, the top three remained unchanged with King out in front ahead of ten Voorde and Buus.

On lap 14, the safety car was deployed as Marinet by Almeras’ Jukka Honkavuori buried their car into the barrier on the exit of Casino Square. As cars passed by, fluid started to drain across the circuit but it was unclear if it was fluid from Honkavuori’s Porsche or from the barrier itself.

Despite the track marshal’s best efforts, race control could not get the circuit back under green-flag conditions which meant the opening race of the season ended behind the safety car. This allowed King to cruise to the line to secure his first victory of 2023.

Podium:

  1. Harry King, BWT Lercher Racing
  2. Larry ten Voorde, Team GP Elite
  3. Bastian Buus, BWT Lechner Racing
