Porsche Supercup: Buus wins in Monza as Pereira secures title
11th September 2022BWT Lechner Racing’s Bastian Buus secured the win ahead of Harry King as their teammate Dylan Pereira secured the 2022 Porsche Supercup title.
How the race unfolded…
It was a great start from Marvin Klein as the CLRT driver covered off Buus into the first corner. But, the Lechner driver went around the outside of Klein into the opening chicane and the two went wheel-to-wheel around the third corner. Buus finally snatched the lead away from Klein in the braking zone of the Della Roggia chicane.
After Klein yielded the race lead from Buus on the exit of the second chicane, the CLRT driver defended – in an aggressive manner – his track position away from championship leader’ Dylan Pereira who looked to shape up a move on Klein into the first
The safety car was deployed after Pierre Martinet’s Stephane Denoual was spun around at Lesmo 1 as the Porshce driver found himself amongst the midfield melee.
Tsunami R.T’s Giammarco Levorato became one of the race’s first retirements as he suffered a heavy amount of damage to his rear bumper. The Tsunami driver was soon ordered to pit, through a black and orange flag, and Levorato was forced to retire from the race with terminal damage to his rear bumper.
The safety car finally peeled back into the pit lane at the end of lap four and left Buus to control the pace. As the race leader curled around the Parabolica curve, Buus decided to bolt away and almost lost the lead to Klein who attempted a move around the outside into the first chicane.
However, the top three remained unchanged: Buus led ahead of Klein and Pereira respectively.
Pereira finally made a move on Klein into the Parabolica at the end of lap seven, to steal away second place, but the CLRT driver tried to regain his lost position into the first corner. However, Klein went in too deep and was forced to take to the shortcut.
As Klein cut the corner, he was forced to yield the position to Pereira but the CLRT driver allowed Pereira’s teammate, Harry King, to pass through accidentally. Through the confusion, Klein soon allowed Pereira through but the CLRT driver soon came under pressure from Team GP Elite’s, championship contender, Larry ten Voorde.
Ten Voorde soon found a way past Klein and the Dutchman found himself in a close battle with Pereira for the final podium position – in the final laps of the race.
As the championship fight boiled on further back, King sat within 0.367 seconds to his teammate, Buus – who was still in the lead, as the second-placed Lechner driver hunted down the race win. Despite his best efforts, King was unable to find a way past his teammate and had to settle for second place.
Podium:
- Bastian Buus, BWT Lechner Racing
