Porsche Supercup: King secures victory in Hungary after race ends on session clock

23rd July 2023 0 By Kamron Kent

BWT Lechner Racing’s Harry King put in a lights-to-flag performance as the British driver secured his second win of the 2023 season in Hungary.

How the race unfolded…

It was a great start from King off the line as he darted right to defend the advances of CLRT’s Dorian Boccolacci. As the pack raced down into turn one, King curled around the opening corner unchallenged while the rest of the field battled for track position.

There was a lock up from those further back but the field managed to get on without any issues.

After the first lap, King led the pack ahead of Boccolacci and, BWT Lechner Racing’s championship leader, Bastian Buus who were second and third respectively.

On the opening lap, a number of drivers made contact but were able to continue on. However, at the end of lap two, the safety car was deployed as the Team GP Elite’s Lucas Groeneveld and Dinamic Motorsport SRL’s Giorgio Amati pulled off to the side of the circuit, on the exit of turn one.

At the end of lap five, the safety car peeled back into the pit lane which left King to control the pace. On the restart, King managed to maintain his race lead without issues as Boccolacci fell back to nearly a second as the lap progressed.

On lap six, down into turn 12, Huber Racing’s Leon Koehler tried to give Fach Auto Tech’s Gustav Burton a push down the back straight. However, the Huber driver outbroke himself and rear-ended Burton which caused the Fach driver to use the escape road, and quickly return to the race albeit a bit further back outside the top 10.

As lap seven commenced, Martinet by Almeras’ Alessandro Ghiretti put his hazards on down the pit straight and allowed the pack to overtake him without issue. As such the Almeras driver fell to the bottom of the order and crawled back into the pit lane to retire.

On lap 12, former Formula 1 racer, Timo Glock was spun around at the left-hander of turn eight by Ombra S.R.L’s Risto Vukov who attempted a move down the inside of the ex-F1 driver. Glock was able to continue on without issue, down in 19th place.

Shortly after Glock’s spin, the race was neutralised with the safety car was a recovery vehicle was put out onto the circuit to recover Team Huber Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo’s stranded Porsche. At the end of lap 14, the Mercedes-AMG safety car was recalled back into the pit lane and left the BWT driver to control the pace once more.

As the pack trundled towards the final corner, King got the session back up to racing speed. The British driver went into turn one relatively unchallenged and Boccolacci lost time to the BWT driver down into turn two, but after a slight mistake the CLRT driver regained the lost ground.

The Supercup race went on to end a lap prematurely as the session’s clock ran down to zero which meant King blasted through the final corner, on lap 15, to take the chequered flag ahead of Boccolacci and Buus.

Podium:

  1. Harry King, BWT Lechner Racing
  2. Dorian Boccolacci, CLRT
  3. Bastian Buus, BWT Lechner Racing
