Porsche Supercup: Schuring becomes youngest-ever winner after race is red flagged
1st August 2023Fach Auto Tech’s Morris Schuring took his maiden Porsche Mobil1 Supercup victory after the race was red-flagged due to a late rain shower, at Belgium’s iconic Spa-Francorchamps.
Schuring lined up on pole position after a great qualifying performance but the Fach Auto driver was joined by CLRT’s Dorian Boccolacci and BWT Lechner Racing’s Bastian Buus who lined up in second and third, respectively.
Schuring remained the race leader throughout the session, despite early challenges from the likes of CLRT’s Dorian Boccolacci and BWT Lechner Racing’s Bastian Buus.
Repelling Boccolacci and Buus’ advances for the race lead, Schuring went on to secure his maiden victory in a lights-to-flag performance when the heavens began to open up in the latter stages.
As a result of the red-flag stoppage, which declared the 18-year-old Dutchman the winner, it also meant Schuring became the youngest-ever winner in the series’ 31-year history.
As a support category for Formula 1, the Porsche Supercup will not return to racing action until after F1’s annual summer break when the sport heads to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix, on August 25 to August 27, 2023.
How the race unfolded…
It was a great start by Schuring as the Fach driver went into the first corner, under pressure from Boccolacci. However, the pole-sitter was able to edge out the CLRT driver on the exit of La Source but this put Boccolacci under threat by Buus who found a space later on in the lap to take second.
At the downhill, right-hander of turn eight, Schuring, Buus and Boccolacci were three-wide into the corner but the order remained unchanged as they raced towards the end of the first lap.
On the final corners of lap four, Buus made a slight error into turn 14 which allowed Schuring to establish a half-a-second gap over Buus. Despite the mistake, the Porsche Supercup championship leader was able to recover and stay ahead of Boccolacci down into Blanchimont.
Alexander Fach, of Fach Auto Tech, reported over his team radio that there were drops of rain in the second and final sectors of the Belgian circuit, on lap six. Despite the suspected change in the weather, a lap later, it did not hinder the front two who still remained within half a second of each other.
The race lead nearly changed hands, at the beginning of lap eight, as Buus dove down the inside of Schuring at La Source. However, the pink BWT-liveried Porsche ran deep on the corner exit which allowed Schuring to get the switch back on the exit and regain the race lead.
The weather had certainly changed, on lap nine, Buus was seen with his front wipers on as he raced up behind the leading Fach Auto driver. The rain looked to fall more down the final corners of the Spa circuit, and into the opening corner.
Schuring even reported the rain had begun to fall harder as he raced up Raidillion.
At the final corner, due to the damp conditions, Schuring and King could not slow down their cars enough to make the Bus Stop chicane and were forced to take the run-off area. While Buus and Boccolacci managed to remain on the track, Schuring retained his race lead as King filtered in behind the CLRT driver.
The safety car was deployed due to the conditions. In his first lap behind Bernd Maylander, the race was red-flagged on lap 11 of 12 which meant Schuring was declared as the race winner with only one full lap left to run.
