Porsche Supercup: Klein wins as race ends under red flag
4th September 2022CLRT’s Marvin Klein secured his Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup maiden win after the session was red flagged while BWT Lechner Racing claim the team’s championship.
How the race unfolded…
Marvin Klein got a great launch and moved over to block the advance of Lechner Racing’s Harry King, who started in P2, as the pack raced towards the opening corner. However, the elbows were out on the opening lap, between Team GP Elite’s Larry ten Voorde (P4) and Lechner’s Dylan Pereira (P5), as the defending world champion forced Pereira wide around the banked corner of turn three.
Dinamic Motorsport’s Phillip Sagger brought out the yellow flag as the Dutch racing driver was found facing the barrier, on the grass verge, in the second sector. Fortunately, the Dinamic driver was able to reverse back onto the circuit and quickly drive back to the pit lane.
As the pack raced towards turn one, at the beginning of lap two, King suffered a large lock up into Tarzan and this forced the Lechner driver to understeer into the side of Martinet’s Jaap Van Lagen. The contact ripped the front bumper off Lagen’s Porsche and debris splattered everywhere across the track down into turn two.
While King was forced to retire at the side of the track, Lagen was able to continue. However, the Martinet driver soon peeled into the pit lane, and retired from the race, as he dragged the remainder of his bumper with him.
As a result of the contact, and debris, the safety car was deployed onto the circuit to allow the track marshals to extract King’s Porsche and clean up the scattered debris.
The safety car finally returned to the pit lane at the end of the fifth lap and Klein was left in control of the field’s pace. The CLRT driver launched off the apex, of the penultimate corner, to get the pack back up to racing speed.
However, is launch was anticipated by Huber Racing’s Morris Schuring who remained close behind the race leader as he broke into turn one.
The yellow flag was soon brought back out as CLRT’s, guest driver, Michael Verhagen was found beached in the gravel. When the CLRT driver arrived at the fast right-hander of turn two, the Dutch driver lost rear tyre grip, rotated around and slipped onto the run off area.
As the Netherlands driver was unable to get out of the gravel trap, the safety car was soon recalled back onto the circuit to allow the track marshals to remove CLRT’s stranded Porsche.
In a similar fashion to the first restart, Klein left it slightly later than his first restart which caught Schuring off guard and allowed the CLRT race leader to continue towards turn one, with minimal threat from those behind.
However, championship contender, ten Voorde tried to slip passed Schuring into the first corner but the defending world champion ran wide on the exit which allowed Schuring to retake his position. As Elite GP driver tried to return back to third place, Pereira closed the door and moved up into ten Voorde’s former position.
The session was soon red flagged as Pierre Martinet teammates, Stephane Denoual and Aaron Mason, had a coming together towards turn seven.
Mason ran wide on the exit of turn five and collided with the barrier, this ricocheted the British driver back onto the circuit and into the path Denoual. Although Mason seemed a bit shaken up, Denoual was able to get out of his car to check up on his teammate – who was quickly seen climbing out of his car.
Due to the collision, and the following red flag, Klein secured his maiden Porsche Mobil1 Supercup win ahead of and Pereira, in P2 and P3 respectively.
