Mercedes is said to have been offered ‘a reality check’ after being wounded last time out in Barcelona, where Ferrari brought an end to the Silver Arrow’s unbeaten streak of six race victories.
The Barcelona circuit is a powerhouse for testing and performance evaluations, having previously been the favoured circuit for pre-season testing with its mix of technical and straight sections. As such, the venue had identified that their competitors had made ground on them, with Ferrari taking their first victory of the year with Lewis Hamilton.
Their team boss, Wolff, is aware that the team stands in the midst of a title fight, with both their drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, and their former driver, Hamilton, all in contention for the 2026 title. However, reliability is hampering their progress.
In Canada, Russell retired from the lead with a power unit failure. The team enjoyed a reliability-free Monaco race, but the problem returned in place of Antonelli, who retired at the Barcelona event, dropping from second place overall. However, both of their drivers still occupy first and third in the drivers’ standings, with Antonelli and Russell, respectively.
McLaren to bring ‘experimental rear wing’ to Austrian Grand Prix
As a result, Wolff claims the team needs ‘to respond.’ He said:
“Barcelona acted as a benchmark for our current performance and, having won the first six races, offered a reality check. Others have gained ground quickly and we need to respond. We are in a fight for both championships but must improve if we want to come out on top come the end of the season.
“Our Achilles heel so far has been reliability. We have lost a large amount of points across both cars in recent races; if we don’t put together clean weekends, our competitors will happily take advantage.”
Despite their ‘reality check,’ Wolff has confirmed the team is set to bring upgrades to the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix, with the aim of improving their performance and reliability.
However, with the quick nature of the Austrian Red Bull Ring, producing one of the fastest lap times on the calendar, the Mercedes team boss has emphasised the importance of stringing together a better race weekend to strengthen their bid for the race win.
“We are not standing still in our efforts; we will bring a few updates to Austria this weekend with a focus on improving both performance and reliability,” Wolff continued.
“The margins are tight, and will be even tighter around Spielberg given the length of the lap. We need to put together a better weekend than we have in recent races but if we can deliver to our maximum, then we know we can challenge for victory.”
