Mercedes withdraw Right of Review against Monaco Penalties

Mercedes confirmed it has now withdrawn its Right of Review submission in relation to the penalties George Russell suffered at the Monaco Grand Prix.

On Friday, Mercedes confirmed it is no longer chasing after a right of review following the penalties that their championship contender, George Russell, suffered during the recent Monaco Grand Prix.

The Brackley-based team had lodged a right of review against the penalties that caught many drivers out during the grand prix, including Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, who regained his Monaco podium after the French team won their review.

However, the team now confirmed their pursuit of a right of review won’t serve the team or the sport and, as such, they withdrew their application. In a statement, Mercedes said:

“We can confirm that we have withdrawn our Right of Review submission relating to the penalties received and served by George Russell during the Monaco Grand Prix.

“Following the decision to rescind Pierre Gasly’s time penalty, it was important for us to explore all available options to address the impact of George’s pitlane speeding penalty on his race result.

“We had a limited time window in which to apply for the Right of Review during the race weekend in Barcelona, and did so in order to reserve our position in this regard.

“Our subsequent collaborative discussion with FIA and Formula One has shown their determination to review the unique circumstances arising from the Monaco Grand Prix and to proactively address the factors that caused them.

“In the face of this clear determination, we have concluded that further pursuit of our Right of Review application will not serve our team or the sport and thus we have withdrawn our submission.”

Russell was one of a handful of drivers who were deemed to have sped in the pit lane during the Monaco race, with others including Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Gasly and his teammate Franco Colapinto.

The Mercedes driver was slapped, as with the other speeding offenders, with a five-second time penalty to be served at his next stop. However, as the team double-stacked, the Mechanics accidentally began working on Russell’s car before the penalty was served.

As a result, Russell was issued a drive-through. This dropped him out of the points when the race restarted, when Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out at the final corner.

The #63 Mercedes could only recover to 12th, having run third overall at the restart, allowing Hamilton to jump him in the world drivers’ standings to move up into second place.
