Ahead of the Austrian GP, Audi has claimed it is encouraged by its recent performances and claims it has established itself in the fight to become the best team amongst the midfield. This comes after two race weekends, in Monaco and Barcelona, where they showed strong pace but were not able to convert this into points.
Despite this, the team will be bringing an upgrade package to both their cars and believes it will strengthen their position and their ability to turn performance into points.
Audi’s Racing Director, Allan McNish, claims the team are building momentum as the team fights on and off-track in relation to car developments and on-track performance. He said:
“We have seen encouraging signs in terms of performance and understanding the car in Monaco and Barcelona, even though we were not able to bring home the results our pace warranted.
“It is important we keep our focus and continue to work hard and develop our car in a highly competitive field. What the team is doing across all areas is translating more consistently on track, and this momentum is something we want to keep building on as we enter another set of back-to-back races, starting with Spielberg this weekend.
“Our goal is to keep moving forward, aiming to maximise everything we can extract on track.”
Racing Bulls looking to continue ‘strong form’ at Austrian Grand Prix
Their experienced driver, Nico Hulkenberg, has re-expressed his disappointment with the previous event in Barcelona ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.
Last time out, Hulkenberg was forced to retire from the grand prix after Racing Bull’s Liam Lawson ran wide and kicked up some gravel, activating the kill switch on his car. He was able to coast back to the pits after the car shut down on the run to the final corners.
Despite the freak incident, the German driver claims the team has made steps ‘in the right direction’ in terms of performance and believes they have the pace to fight for points.
However, he has expressed the importance of putting together a clean weekend in Austria. He said:
“The result in Barcelona was disappointing because we had the pace, the position and the opportunity to bring home a good result. Still, the two most recent events have shown that we are making steps in the right direction when it comes to performance.
“We have the pace to fight for points, and it is a matter of time until we reap the rewards of our work. Spielberg is next up, and it’s always a great event with a very unique layout and scenery. It’s a short track and deceptively easy: you don’t have a lot of chances to make up for errors, so qualifying well is important.
“But what matters most is putting together a clean weekend overall – three solid days without any mistakes.”
