Pirelli confirm tyre compounds for Austrian and British Grand Prix

Pirelli has announced the tyre compounds for the upcoming Austrian and British Grand Prix, which will take place in the next few weeks.

Pirelli has released the tyre compounds which will be used in the upcoming Austrian and British races, taking place at the end of June and the beginning of July, respectively.

The Austrian race will be the traditional F1 weekend, but the British GP is set to return to a sprint format for the first time since its inauguration in the 2021 season.

As such, the sole tyre manufacturer, Pirelli, has confirmed contrasting tyre compounds with the Austrian event taking the softest of the range, whilst the British race will enjoy the hardest compounds Pirelli has to offer.

Austrian Grand Prix

Austria will see the softest three options of the Pirelli range, the C3, C4 and the C5, with the C3 being the hard tyre, C4 the medium and C5 the soft tyre.

The tyre manufacturer decided on this due to the incredibly short lapped nature of the Red Bull Ring, meaning heavy braking and acceleration produce thermal degradation, and won’t expose the axles to large lateral loads.

Even though the circuit features a high-level of abrasiveness on its old surface, Pirelli confirmed wear is not a decisive factor in their decision.

British Grand Prix

With high lateral forces thanks to high-speed corners akin to those at Suzuka and Spa-Francorchamps, Pirelli has confirmed the hardest trio of compounds for the British event. As such, the C1 will stand as the hard compound, C2 the medium, and C3 the soft tyre.

Tyres will take a beating at the British race, prompting the hardest compounds, with the front axles being ‘heavily stressed,’ with the left-hand tyres expected to take the brunt due to the amount of right-hand corners.

As previously mentioned, due to the British GP being a sprint race, it also means the teams will have one less set of tyres than their usual amount during traditional Grand Prix weekends. As such, the teams will receive 12 sets of slick tyres for the weekend.
