At the Monaco GP, Gasly finished the race third on the road, following Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton across the line for a podium position. However, following a time penalty being applied, the French driver was demoted to seventh overall.
Having climbed to fifth place, after Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out at the final corner, prompting a safety car and then a red flag, the Alpine driver made use of the second restart.
Going into turn one, he filtered into fourth place behind Mercedes’ George Russell, who had to pull into the pit lane for a drive-through penalty for failing to serve a penalty. This, in turn, pushed the Alpine driver into a podium position.
However, he still had to serve time penalties for speeding in the pit lane. Following the result, Gasly has said he is ‘heartbroken’ by the race’s outcome after he had his ‘lifelong dream’ of a Monaco podium pulled away. He said:
“I am absolutely heartbroken by the outcome of today’s race. I have so many emotions right now, not only after such a challenging weekend where you are on the limit so often and pushing so much, but also to have a lifelong dream of a Monaco podium taken away from me for reasons which I just cannot comprehend.
“I know I was under the pit lane speed limit and activated it much before the line. We also have margin for these occurrences to not go over, so I just hope they can review it properly and give us back the result all of us at the team deserve.”
Alpine lodge Right of Review after Monaco GP speeding penalties
Gasly, as well as four other drivers, including Hamilton, Russell, teammate Franco Colapinto and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, fell foul of speeding in the pit lane during the grand prix.
However, Gasly was the only driver to be caught out twice, going 0.1km/h and 0.4km/h over the speed limit, and was slapped with two individual five-second time penalties.
Following the result, Alpine has now lodged a Right of Review against the speeding offences.
“It’s certainly unusual that so many drivers and teams were caught out by it today so something clearly is not right,” Gasly commented. “I knew the situation when we stopped for the red flag and I just tried to push as hard as I could to maximise the end result, knowing the penalty was going to be applied.”
