Leclerc confirms rear-brake issue led to Monaco GP crash
8th June 2026Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc endured a painful end to his home race at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix as the Monegasque crashed, of which he claims the rear brakes were the cause.

Ferrari’s home hero has endured a troublesome weekend at his home event. Despite setting the fastest time in FP1, and finishing second in FP2, the Monegasque had trouble on Saturday with his brakes.
The Ferrari driver claimed the brakes were ‘horrendous’ during the final hour of practice and, as a result, he lacked full confidence to attack the Monaco street circuit, ultimately qualifying in fourth, behind teammate Lewis Hamilton.
According to the Monaco driver, this issue continued on into the race where he crashed, nose-first, into the barrier at the final corner, on lap 66 of 78. However, he had confirmed they have a solution in place to avoid this in the future. He said:
“Finishing my home race like this is disappointing. I had an issue with my rear brakes in the last corner and hit the wall.
“The positive to take from this weekend is that we have a solution in place and will adjust the configuration of my brakes.”
Whilst the Monegasque’s brakes may have played a part in the incident, the on-track condition would not have helped.
Following Lance Stroll’s, Aston Martin, crash at the same corner, it was revealed that the track had loosened up some freshly resurfaced asphalt, leaving a tarmac scar in the road.
Having returned to the circuit on Sunday, after missing out on Saturday’s running due to being admitted into a medical facility, Ferrari team principal, Fred Vasseur, has shared Leclerc’s frustration. He said:
“It was obviously a very frustrating outcome. We experienced brake issues throughout the weekend and something was clearly not working as it should.
“We will analyse the situation carefully, understand exactly what happened and make sure we address it before Barcelona. Charles was in a strong position and it’s disappointing to lose those points, especially in his home race.”
