Five weeks after the last grand prix, in Japan, F1 prepares to go racing once more and for the first time in the United States this season, at the Miami GP. However, severe weather conditions pose a risk that the incoming race weekend might not go to plan.

If the race is cancelled due to bad weather, it will mark the third consecutive F1 cancellation after the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix were cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

But, if the race goes ahead, F1 has a plan on how the points will be awarded, which spiralled from the controversial 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. That year, points were awarded for a two-lap race behind the safety car, won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, in F1’s shortest-ever race.

As such, there is now a minimum threshold that has to be met before points are awarded, including a mandatory two racing laps, which are not behind the safety car or the virtual safety car.

So, according to the F1 regulations, how will the points be awarded if the Miami Grand Prix is cancelled after it starts?

Miami Grand Prix: the full F1 schedule and times

Less than 25%

As long as more than two racing laps are completed without a safety car intervention, including the VSC, points will be awarded. However, if less than 25% of the race distance has been completed, then only the top five finishers will be awarded points:

  1. 6 points
  2. 4 points
  3. 3 points
  4. 2 points
  5. 1 point

More than 25% but less than 50%

In the event the race is cancelled before the halfway mark, but after completing more than 25%, the top nine finishers will score points.

  1. 13 points
  2. 10 points
  3. 8 points
  4. 6 points
  5. 5 points
  6. 4 points
  7. 3 points
  8. 2 points
  9. 1 point

More than 50% but less than 75%

If the leader has crossed over the 50% of the scheduled race distance, but has not completed 75% of the race, the points will be awarded to the top 10 finishers.

  1. 19 points
  2. 14 points
  3. 12 points
  4. 10 points
  5. 8 points
  6. 6 points
  7. 4 points
  8. 3 points
  9. 2 points
  10. 1 point

More than 75%

If the race is cancelled after more than 75% of its scheduled distance has been completed, full points will be awarded to the top 10 finishers:

  1. 25 points
  2. 18 points
  3. 15 points
  4. 12 points
  5. 10 points
  6. 8 points
  7. 6 points
  8. 4 points
  9. 2 points
  10. 1 point

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
