The aptly named Sunshine State may not be as sunny this weekend as F1 drivers, teams and fans would expect, thanks to recent events, with the likelihood of a heavy, wet race.
According to weather reports, it is expected that there could be thundery showers on race day, with a high chance of rain at the start of the race.
This does pose a risk both on and off the circuit. Whilst the drivers are capable of racing in wet conditions, with the intermediate tyres and seemingly less favourable extreme wet tyres, the FIA and F1 do have off-track requirements.
One such requirement is that the FIA helicopter, on stand-by near the track, must always be ready to take off in an emergency. If conditions aren’t safe for the helicopter to take off, then the session could be stopped or delayed, until safer conditions arrive.
Practice sessions have been cancelled in the past for similar instances, including the Styrian Grand Prix in 2020, with FP3 cancelled due to torrential rain.
If it is to be cancelled due to bad weather conditions, it won’t be the first time this has happened in recent years, most recently the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The Imola race was called off just before the weekend got underway due to bad weather and flooding.
However, the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix was the most recent race weekend cancelled part-way through, thanks to bad weather and zero visibility.
The Grand Prix itself was cancelled after two laps behind the safety car – becoming the shortest F1 race in history.
