World Rally Championship launches ‘spectator safety’ campaign

The World Rally Championship has launched a new ‘spectator safety’ campaign, designed to urge fans to enjoy the sport from designated safe areas.

The WRC has set up a new campaign, announced on Wednesday, to improve spectator safety whilst at the official events, after spectators have gotten a bit too close to the action.

This new safety campaign was debuted on the sport’s official social media channels, which highlights the risky positions some fans have placed themselves on such as the edge of the roads and down in crevices.

The video also contains a number of WRC drivers highlighting the need for spectators to be safe. 2019 World Rally Champion, and Hyundai driver, Ott Tanak said:

“We are pushing to the limits. We know the road is closed and that the people are safe – even if it goes wrong, we’re risking our lives, not anybody else’s.”

“It’s amazing to see people who don’t really realise the speed those cars are going, and if it goes wrong, obviously they would probably lose their life – but for us we will have that in our mind forever too,” added Toyota eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier.

The WRC has advised for spectators to be safe they have said:

  • Stay in designated fan zones
  • Never stand on the outside of corners or at the end of long straights
  • Keep clear of escape roads, junctions and prohibited areas
  • Avoid standing lower than the road.
  • Follow instructions from marshals at all times
  • Stay alert, especially when the stages are live

WRC’s spectator safety campaign coincides with the FIA volunteer month, highlight the crucial role volunteers have in keeping rallies safe for both crews, teams and fans.

Crowd and spectator safety has been an issue recently. Last year, the WRC had to abandon two stages at Rally Poland due to crowd control issues (SS3 and SS7) and had to red-flag stage six, before it was conducted.

The sport, in their message, said:

“Rally fans are a vital part of the sport’s atmosphere, but the safety of everyone on the stages must come first.”
