WRC confirms Italy move for 2027 season
23rd September 2025The World Rally Championship has confirmed that the sport will head to Rome for the 2027 Italian rally, replacing Sardinia after next season.

It has been speculated that the Italian round of the WRC would be relocated elsewhere to accommodate the Italian slot in the calendar, with Sardinia at risk of being dropped.
On Tuesday, the WRC confirmed that the sport will head to Rome in 2027 instead of Sardinia, with the latter set to enter the European Rally Championship instead.
The WRC Rally Italia Sardinia event will continue to hold onto its position for the 2026 season, but will be moved over to Rome in the following season. Sardinia will then continue to take Rome’s place on the ERC schedule until 2030.
“We are confident that this agreement represents the best course of action for the future of top-level rallying in Italy,” said WRC Promoter Senior Event Director, Simon Larkin.
“The decision to postpone the move until 2027 will give us the necessary time, together with the FIA, to best prepare the event in Rome, ensuring its success from the very first year.
“Our priority is to create a top-level event that can honour the history of rallying in Italy and project it toward an even brighter future.”
The WRC has described Roma’s run on the ERC calendar, in 2026, whilst the Sardinia event takes place, as a ‘dress rehearsal for 2027.’
Whilst it has been announced on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the decision is subject to final approval by the FIA and the WRC Promoter, based on event location, special stages and organisational structure.
