On Tuesday, Porsche confirmed that it will stop its involvement in the WEC next season, as the brand focuses more on Formula E and IMSA.
Porsche confirmed that it has undertaken ‘comprehensive realignment’ and will focus on two factory projects. They have confirmed it will continue to compete its 99X electric in the ABB Formula E championship, and its Porsche 963 in the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
As such, the team will exit the WEC at the end of the current season.
In the announcement, Member of the Executive Board for Development at Porsche AG, Dr Michael Steiner said:
“We very much regret that, due to the current circumstances, we will not be continuing our involvement in the WEC after this season.”
In their reasoning, Porsche confirmed that they are ‘gaining valuable insights’ for the brand’s electric production sports cars. The fourth-generation cars, introduced for Season 13, will bring further development freedom.
This is in the hope that it will allow Porsche to ‘achieve an even steeper learning curve’ for its all-electric production vehicles.
Additionally, the IMSA championship being maintained as a factory project underscores the importance of the North American market and endurance racing to the brand.
In keeping both the Formula E and IMSA projects going and removing the WEC involvement, Porsche states:
“The two factory commitments in Formula E and IMSA, customer racing remains an important pillar of Porsche’s motorsport strategy.”

Hi, I’m Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion.
I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I’ve loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
