Eight-time world champion Ogier topped the timing boards, making a move from third on the leaderboard to first after Saturday’s six stages. Evans had previously led the rally, after snatching it away from Hyundai’s Adrien Fourmaux, after the morning loop, but the Welshman couldn’t hold back the French world champion’s charge.
It was a wet start to Saturday, on Pelún 1, with heavy rain impacting the crews. Despite this, Ott Tanak set the fastest time on the board, as one of the first drivers out on the stage, after his late retirement on Friday.
The Estonian continued to put in the fastest time on the board on the second test of the morning, Lota 1, but drove back to the service park afterwards to retire for the day. It was a strategic call to allow Tanak to save his engine and tyres for a Super Sunday charge, with 10 points up for grabs.
There was some early drama in the opening test as M-Sport suffered an issue with two of its cars.
Chile’s Alberto Heller and Irishman Joshua McErlean both stopped due to mechanical problems. The latter suffered power problems 3.1km into the stage, whilst Heller had similar issues 800m in. It left Gregoire Munster to fly the flag for M-Sport as their sole remaining car.
After the morning loop, Evans had snatched the rally lead and held a 5.6-second advantage over eight-time world champion and championship rival, Ogier, as Fourmaux was demoted down to third place, 9.3s away from the Welshman.
When the action resumed in the afternoon, Ogier managed to preserve his tyres on the second run of Pelún, whilst cutting the deficit to Evans down to 2.7 seconds. After the second run of Lota, Ogier snatched the rally lead with a second to spare.
By the end of the day, Ogier finished the day 6.3 seconds ahead of Evans, and Fourmaux completed the top three, in third, 26.8 seconds behind.
So, after Saturday, how does the leaderboard shape up?
The Top 10
- Sebastien Ogier, Toyota – 2 hours, 23 minutes and 13.9 seconds
- Elfyn Evans, Toyota +6.3s

McErlean and Heller remain classified on the leaderboard, albeit down in 39th and 40th, respectively, over an hour behind the leader.
The final four stages will get underway on Sunday before a winner is crowned in Chile. The first car is expected to get out on stage at 12:23pm local time.
