Tsunoda suffered a shock elimination from qualifying on Saturday afternoon, as the Japanese driver was pushed out of Q1 and was set to start the grand prix down in 16th on the grid.

However, in the build-up to the grand prix, the FIA technical delegate, Jo Bauer, referred a document to the stewards regarding changes to Tsunoda’s car under parc ferme.

It was revealed that Tsunoda has taken new engine components, taking his fifth; Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Turbo Charger, Motor Generator Unit – Heat and Kinetic (MGU-H and MGU-K). The technical delegate also confirmed there were some changes to the cars brake cooling configuration.

Besides the pit-lane start, Tsunoda also picked up an accumulation of grid penalties, which added up to 40 places. The stewards confirmed Tsunoda will be forced to start the race from the pit lane. They said:

“The use of each additional element in this case carries a 10 grid place penalty. Therefore there is an accumulation of 40 places.

“Further, because the changes to the brake cooling configuration were made while the Car was held under Parc Ferme conditions in breach of Article 40.2 without the approval of the Technical Delegate, in accordance with Article 40.9, Car 22 must start the race from the pit lane and follow the procedures prescribed in Article 44.2.”

It now means all drivers who started behind Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Esteban Ocon (Haas), Nico Hulkenberg (Kick Sauber) and Alexander Albon (Williams), will move up a position.
