Verstappen took his 44th career pole position at Silverstone, pipping a tight fight for the top grid spot for Sunday’s British GP, and the Dutchman beat both McLarens. McLaren’s championship leader, Oscar Piastri, will start alongside the defending world champion ahead of Lando Norris, in second and third, respectively.
Alpine’s Franco Colapinto was the only retirement of the session as the Argentine crashed out in Q1 as he lost control into Club. The Alpine spun out onto the gravel and hit the barrier. He tried to make it back to the pit lane but he stopped out on track, near the pit exit, and qualified last.
But two drivers will endure grid penalties: Haas’ Oliver Bearman and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.
Bearman was the most recent of the penalties, and the most severe, as the British driver will serve a 10-place grid penalty for speeding under red flag conditions as he attacked the pit entry. To make matters worse, the Briton crashed under braking into the barrier, forcing him into a spin before he continued to his garage.
Antonelli will serve a three-place grid penalty for his crash with Verstappen in Austria. The Mercedes rookie locked up into turn three at the Red Bull Ring and took out the defending world champion at turn three during the Austrian Grand Prix.
