Following FP1, topped by Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, Silverstone came alive once more with the roar of F1 machinery as Norris went on to top the timing boards after the second hour of practice.

It has been a good start to the weekend for British drivers as they lock out an all-British opening day with Hamilton and Norris’ fastest times.

Mediums were the favoured tyre in the opening stints of the session with Haas being the only cars on the hards initially. However, Williams’ Carlos Sainz brought out the yellow flag mid-session with a spin.

The Spaniard lost the rear on the exit of Luffield and spun out, almost hitting Hamilton. The Spaniard finally got moving again but was noted for rejoining unsafely as he encountered Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg on track.

Sainz has been summoned to the Stewards for alleged dangerous driving.

How did the second hour of practice end?

Norris set the pace in FP2 with a lap time of 1m 25.816s, 0.222s faster than the Ferrari pairing of Charles Leclerc and Hamilton, in second and third, with Piastri completing a McLaren sandwich in fourth. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen rounded out the top five, nearly half a second off the pace.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli headed the Mercedes team in FP2, in sixth, ahead of Russell who finished eighth, as Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll filtered in between the two drivers in seventh.

The Racing Bulls rounded out the top 10, headed by Isack Hadjar then Liam Lawson, in ninth and 10th. The Kiwi was also the last driver to remain within a second of Norris’ best time.

Williams’ Alexander Albon was the fastest driver in the bottom 10, in 11th, 1.024s behind Norris’ time and ahead of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, in 12th and 13th. Haas’ Esteban Ocon and Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top 15, in 14th and 14th, respectively.

Sainz was the fifth slowest car of the session, 1.3s off the pace, ahead of Hulkenberg (17th) and both Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, 18th and 20th. Haas’ Oliver Bearman completed the 20-car field in 19th.
