Friday was the first time that Hamilton left the pit garage in his red overalls and red Ferrari as the sport ignited the British Grand Prix, and the seven-time world champion had a great start to the weekend with the fastest time in Free Practice 1.

The opening day went off without a hitch for the Scuderia as both his and, teammate, Charles Leclerc, clocked up 110 laps around Silverstone, which the team described as ‘a solid day’s work.’

Although Hamilton was not fastest in FP2, pipped to the post by McLaren’s Lando Norris, the seven-time world champion confirmed there was still time to find around the Northamptonshire circuit. He said:

“It’s been a really exciting day. Pretty incredible to be out on track at Silverstone in a Ferrari for the first time.

“The car felt good in both sessions, even though I hit some traffic on my fastest lap in FP2, so there’s definitely time to find.”

Hamilton, alongside his teammate, completed both of his practice programmes without issues as the two Ferrari’s traded fastest lap times in FP2 before settling in third and second at the end of the second hour.

The seven-time world champion ran both the medium and soft compound tyres in second practice to help the team build up valuable data, as they look to threaten McLaren this weekend.

Ferrari has confirmed that the focus tomorrow will be on preparing for qualifying at Silverstone during the final hour of practice, starting at 11:30am local time, as Leclerc believes they are ‘on the back foot’ while showing good race pace.

“In our qualifying trim, we still seem to be a bit on the back foot, while we are more at ease with our race pace,” said Leclerc. “I really enjoy driving on this track and I look forward to tomorrow.”
