Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed an unlikely pole position for the British GP, pipping both McLaren cars by just over a tenth from the championship leader, Oscar Piastri.

There will be two grid penalties to be served this weekend with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Haas’ Oliver Bearman, who will complete their three-place and 10-place penalties, respectively, at Silverstone.

Antonelli received a three-place grid penalty at the Austrian Grand Prix after locking up and colliding with Verstappen at Turn 3 of the Red Bull Ring. He originally qualified seventh, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Bearman, on the other hand, was given a 10-place grid penalty at this weekend’s event. He was deemed to fall foul of a red flag infringement as he sped up to the pit entry, under red flag conditions, and crashed into the barrier.

The Haas driver put in an impressive qualifying performance for his home grand prix, as he made it to Q3 and qualified eighth before his penalty was applied.
