Austria GP: Lando Norris leads McLaren 1-2 in F1 FP2
27th June 2025McLaren’s Lando Norris has taken the fastest lap, pipping teammate and championship leader Oscar Piastri by a tenth, in second practice at the Austrian Grand Prix.

After missing out the first hour of practice, replaced by Alex Dunne, Norris made his first appearance of the weekend and went fastest overall at the end of the second hour of running.
Norris was not the only driver to return as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also made his first appearance of the event in Free Practice 2 after being replaced by rookie Dino Beganovic.
In overcast and dry conditions, it allowed the teams and drivers to dial in their set-ups ahead of Saturday’s busy day, which will feature the final hour of practice and qualifying.
How the second hour finished…
Norris set the fastest lap of the weekend, so far, as the Briton ventured out onto the Red Bull Ring for the first time this weekend. The McLaren driver pipped both Piastri and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who occupied second and third, with two tenths between first and third.
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Leclerc rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively, with the latter 0.6s off the pace of the McLaren driver.
Free Practice 1’s pacesetter, and Mercedes driver, George Russell finished the session in sixth ahead of Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda, Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Ferrari driver, Lewis Hamilton, in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively.
Similarly to FP1, Mercedes Kimi Antonelli completed FP2 in 11th ahead of the two Racing Bulls, Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar, in 12th and 13th. Former teammates, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Haas’ Esteban Ocon completed the session in 14th and 15th.
The Williams pairing of Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz led the bottom five in 16th and 17th, ahead of Haas’ Oliver Bearman, Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine’s Franco Colpainto, in 18th, 19th and 20th.
