Lando Norris tops Spanish GP FP1 ahead of Max Verstappen
30th May 2025McLaren’s Lando Norris was the fastest driver in Formula 1’s first practice hour at the Spanish Grand Prix, pipping Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.

The first practice hour was the first session where the teams could get their initial tastes of the new technical directive, which clamps down on flexi-front wings. A decision that is expected to reset the pecking order, potentially.
Haas’ FP1 rookie Ryo Hirakawa was the first driver to have a moment out on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as the Japanese driver ran wide at turn 10, skipping across the gravel before he returned to the track.
He was not the only FP1 rookie as Victor Martins, a Formula 2 driver, made his F1 debut with Williams, in the place of Alexander Albon.
How did the first hour finish?
Norris topped the timing boards after the first hour with a lap time of 1 minute 13.718 seconds, as Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished second and third, three tenths behind. Followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, in fourth and fifth.
Racing Bulls found themselves inside the top 10 with Liam Lawson leading Isack Hadjar, in sixth and eighth. Haas’ Oliver Bearman filled the gap in seventh.
This left Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly to complete the top 10 in ninth and 10th.
Mercedes’ George Russell was the fastest driver in the bottom 10, in 11th, as Aston Martin followed behind, Lance Stroll leading Fernando Alonso in 12th and 13th.
Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto finished in 14th and 16th as Williams’ Carlos Sainz completed the session in 15th.
Hirakawa led the remaining four drivers in 17th, ahead of Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Martins and Franco Colapinto (Alpine), in 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively.
