Alpine’s Pierre Gasly has been slapped with a reprimand for causing a collision with Red Bull Racing’s Yuki Tsunoda at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Gasly retired early on at the Monaco GP, the first of two retirements of the entire race, as he collided with Tsunoda into the Nouvelle Chicane at turn 10.

The contact had broken the front-left suspension on the Frenchman’s Alpine. With three wheels still in working order, whilst his front-left hung on, Gasly managed to crawl back to the pits to retire.

However, Gasly reported that he did not have brakes, having broken after the contact, and he was brought to a stop in the pit lane.

Following the incident, the stewards investigated the incident and concluded a reprimand to Gasly was the appropriate result.

In the stewards’ report, Gasly and his team representative believed Tsunoda failed to leave a car’s width whilst moving under braking. However, the officials had reviewed the lines Tsunoda had previously taken and determined the Japanese driver had taken his usual racing line.

In conclusion, the stewards believed Gasly’s overtake on Tsunoda was ‘ambitious and unlikely to succeed,’ and the former should’ve exercised more caution. They said:

“So, in the circumstances, it appeared to us that the attempted overtake of Car 22, in the Monaco circuit, on the approach to Turn 10 was ambitious and unlikely to succeed.

“The driver of Car 10 ought to have exercised greater caution in attempting such a move and should have anticipated Car 22 moving to the right, as had happened in the previous laps.

“We also checked the telemetry of Car 10 whose rear tyres locked slightly while braking and that contributed to the incident as it reduced the braking efficiency of the car.

“We therefore considered that the driver of Car 10 was wholly or predominantly to blame for the collision. We took into account the fact that there was no immediate and obvious sporting consequence to Car 22 from the collision.

“Instead, it was Car 10 that was significantly impacted by the collision.

“We therefore applied the Penalty guidelines where there was no immediate and obvious sporting consequence and imposed a reprimand (driving) on the driver of Car 10.”

Gasly was only one of two drivers who had retired from the Monegasque race, as Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso suffered mechanical problems and pulled off to the side of the circuit.
