Norris has taken his sixth championship victory at the iconic Principality of Monaco after a controversial race where all the drivers were mandated to a two-stop race.

The Briton held control of the Monegasque race from the race start, despite a heavy lock-up into the opening corner. From there, Norris never really looked under threat, even when Leclerc was on his gearbox.

The win also marks his second win of the season, following his season-opening win in Australia, which was the last time he secured pole position before the Monaco weekend.

In the end, as expected, the top four finished as they started, with Leclerc and Piastri completing the podium, in second and third, respectively. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished fourth, with moments when he had led the race.

The two-stop strategy was introduced to improve the racing spectacle of the Monaco GP, but many drivers found themselves driving seconds off the leading pace to build gaps for their two stops.

In the end, Norris’ victory means he will cut down the deficit to his teammate Piastri in the championship. Three points now separate Norris (158pts) from Piastri (161pts) in the drivers’ standings.

At the same time, the 1-3 finish for McLaren, as Mercedes finish pointless down in 11th and 18th, means the Woking-based team will extend their championship lead to 319pts – 173pts ahead of Mercedes.

Next up is the Spanish Grand Prix, the final race of the first European triple header of the F1 season, on May 30 to June 1.
