Colapinto avoids punishment for Monaco GP red flag infringment
24th May 2025Alpine’s Franco Colapinto has avoided the same fate as Haas’ Oliver Bearman as the stewards took no further action against the Argentine for a red flag infringement.

In the dying moments of Free Practice 3 at the Monaco Grand Prix, ahead of the all-important qualifying session, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton hit the barrier at Massenet and brought out the red flag with less than two minutes to spare.
During this time, it was noted that Colapinto had overtaken Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll after the red flag was shown. However, unlike Bearman, Colpainto had taken reasonable steps to slow down his car after the red flag was shown.
In their report, the stewards confirmed they had reviewed the positioning/marshalling system data, telemetry, video, timing, team radio and in-car video evidence.
They said that there was only 30 metres between Colapinto and Stroll when the light panel turned red, from blue, and there was ‘a considerable speed delta’ between the two parties.
Whilst the stewards confirmed Colapinto had overtaken Stroll under red flag conditions, they also stated that the Argentine had taken immediate steps to slow down significantly as per the requirements.
As such, they did not consider it to be necessary to summon the driver and concluded no further action would be taken against the Alpine driver.
Yesterday, it was reported that Bearman had also overtaken under red flags, but the Haas driver did not take immediate steps to slow down his car, overtaking Williams’ Carlos Sainz in the process.
As such, Bearman was slapped with a 10-place grid penalty. He will join Stroll, who has his one-place grid penalty for causing a collision with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
