Norris has claimed his second pole position of the season. The championship contender will start the Monaco GP alongside Ferrari’s home hero Charles Leclerc.
Qualifying was the first session of the weekend where Leclerc didn’t stand as the fastest man after he completed a clean sweep of fastest laps in practice.
The pack had to contend with two red flag stoppages after both Mercedes drivers retired from qualifying.
Kimi Antonelli crashed into the barrier at the Nouvelle Chicane, having clipped the entry barrier, in Q1. George Russell suffered technical issues in the tunnel and stopped out on track in Q2.
In the final runs of qualifying, Leclerc looked to take another session as the fastest driver out on track as the Monegasque took provisional pole. However, Norris’ final run was just enough to topple Leclerc’s time to take his first pole position since Australia.
McLaren’s championship leader, Oscar Piastri, completed the top three behind Leclerc.
The order could be shaken up before the race gets underway on Sunday as both Lewis Hamilton, who qualified fourth, and Lance Stroll, already slapped with a grid penalty, could face impeding infringements.
Hamilton had allegedly impeded fifth-placed Verstappen in Q1 as the two crossed paths up into Massenet, whilst Stroll impeded Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in the same qualifying session.
